Borrowing, Returning and Renewing

How do I borrow and return items from The Library?

At enrolment, all students are issued with a Carnegie Card which allows them to borrow items from The Library. Staff are issued with a staff Carnegie Card which also acts as their Library borrowing card. Guest users receive their card by post.

Once you have your staff/student/guest card you will need to collect your Library PIN from The Help and Information Point.

Students, staff and guest users can borrow from either Civic Quarter or Headingley Library. Students from other Universities may be eligible to join, but may only be able to use The Library for reference purposes. Please enquire at the Help and Information Point.

You must always carry your card with you as you will need it to gain access to, and use the facilities within The Library.

How long can I borrow items for?

Standard loans may be borrowed for two weeks at Civic Quarter and Headingley. If more than two holds have been placed on an item, the loan period will temporarily change to one week.

Short Loan Collection - most resources can be borrowed overnight but some are for use in The Library only and others may only be used in the Short Loan area . The date label inside the book tells you how long you can borrow it for.

School practice collection - resources from this collection can be borrowed by all users. Some students who go on teaching practice are able to borrow School Practice resources for up to 4 weeks. Ask staff at the HIP if you have any queries regarding your eligibility.

Staff and Researchers may borrow standard loans for eight weeks. Resources will be recalled if other users have placed holds on them.

How do I renew resources I have on loan?

Are there items I can't borrow?

Journals are for reference use only and must not be removed from The Library.

Resources from Quick Reference, Statistics and Bibliographies Collections cannot be borrowed as these always need to be available to all users. Resources within the main book stock which you can't borrow usually have a red 'not for loan' spine sticker and are stamped inside with a 'for reference use only' message.
